Personal Comments:  First licensed in 1972 as a commercial radio operator. Worked as a DJ from 1972 to 1974, when I attended electronics school and received my FCC Radiotelephone Operator First Class.  Promoted to Chief Engineer for three stations in Northcentral Pennsylvania and a staff engineer for six more stations in Central and Western Pennsylvania.

In 1976, I was receiving calls from people who were working toward their amateur license, who would pepper me with theory questions. One of them, Dale, said, "You should get a ham license, it's fun." I said that was a good idea but I thought it was more fun to do it and get a paycheck. Needless to say, Dale finally wore me down and I got a Novice ticket in 1976, upgraded to General (It was still a one-year license back then) and was happy ragchewing and handling traffic for ten years until I got my advanced in 1986. On the best day of my life, I copied maybe 18 wpm and never quite passed the Extra code, even though I passed the written three times. Finally in 1996, I became a "Codeless Extra."

Over the years I was also a Communications Technician with the New York State Police, and a Radio Operator/NCOIC Communications, in the 139 Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, New York Air National Guard. Still active, mostly on 40 Meters, dividing my time between 7.272 Ragchew and ECARS. Dale was right, Ham Radio truly is fun.
