KA1MQ, Jim Freed, Candidate for Director in Dec 2016 Election
Name:
Jim Freed
QTH:
Hudson, NH
ECARS History:
- Member Since:
approximately 2010. Lifetime member #1954
- Previous Offices/Duties:
No.
- Current Net Control Operator:
Ham since 1976, 40 years now. My first exposure to amateur radio
was from my father, WA3HJZ. I kept his equipment running and helped
build antennas. At that time I was more interested in his Elmer’s
daughter than ham radio. I did however develop an interest in
electronics. I was first licensed in 1976 as WN8ZVJ in the Detroit MI
area. I got my general class license at about the same time. I was a
field engineer and traveled extensively, and I used MIDCARS to contact
my father from the mobile radio - an NCX3. After moving to New Hampshire
in the 80’s, I upgraded to Advanced Class license and changed my call to
KA1MQ. In 2010, I upgraded to Extra Class license and replaced most of
my equipment at the same time. That equipment continues to serve
me well today and includes a Yaesu FT950 and my dad’s old Heathkit SB200
amplifier.
I very much enjoy ECARS, both as a user and a Net Control Operator,
which explains my having four NCS sessions a week. Becoming a
Director would further enable me to give back to this service and help
it move forward.
In addition to ECARS and
radio, I have an abiding interest in old cars.
My cars include a 1951 Ford coupe, a 1957 Ford Thunderbird, two 1930’s
Chevy trucks, currently in pieces, and a Nash Metropolitan.
I'm not a purist and my old cars can be modified and don't have to be
original stock.
Currently retired but always
looking for work.
In my earlier professional life, I spend 40 years in the computer
industry.
